How to make the Lide 80 work in 10.6 Snow Leopard [Updated: CS5 Info]

[EDIT: Canon seems to have pulled the drivers from their site. Tricksy. So I'll host them for now. Click here for LiDE80_7252MXEN.dmg file. ]
Lots of people are having trouble getting the LIDE 80 to work in 10.6 “Snow Leopard”. Well I was able to recreate the issue (application runs, but unexpectedly quits the second you try to perform a scan) and come up with a fix. Instructions:
- Be sure you have installed Rosetta. It is an option when installing 10.6 Snow Leopard. It is not installed by default, so you will need to customize your install.
- Be sure you have the latest version of the LIDE80_7252MXEN.dmg file. Even though it is the same old version number, Canon seems to have updated the installed to make it work in 10.5 and up.
- Run the installer.
- The problem is that the installer misses one item during the installation. Re-open the LIDE80_7252MXEN.dmg image. Inside you will see a folder titled “Into Users_Shared”. Inside that you will find a folder called CanoScanLIDE80. Copy this folder into Users->Shared on your hard drive.
- If you’re using Photoshop* (see below for note on CS5 compatibility), look in the disk image for a folder called “Into Plug-In” and copy its contents to Applications->Adobe Photoshop->Plug-Ins->Import/Export. You must run Photoshop in Rosetta in order for the plugin to work. To do so, go to the Photoshop app and click once on it to select it. Then press Command-i to bring up the Get Info window. Click the box which says Open Using Rosetta.
- Restart your computer.
- You’re done. Hope this works for you… please let me know!
*PLEASE NOTE: This workaround will probably not work with CS5 because CS5 dropped support for Universal Binary code. It was a good move for the Creative Suite, but a tough one for LIDE 80 users and people with PowerPC Macs. No Universal Binary means no Rosetta. This workaround depends on Rosetta. When I installed CS5, I kept Photoshop CS4 (and the CanoScan Toolbox) for scanning – you might want to do the same.

it works!!!
thank you thank you!
really appreciate you taking the time to fix this problem!
I just don’t know what to say..I’m giggling like a schoolgirl in seeing my Lide80 working under 10.6.1.
I use Hamrick’s excellent Vuescan but, even with Use Rosetta toggled it was crashing.
The trick was adding the missing folder into Shared.
Thank you soooooooo very much…this needs to be shared to prevent fellow L80 users from dumping this otherwise great scanner.
I must be doing something wrong, but I can’t figure out what! Gah. Are you using Photoshop CS3 or another version?
I should add that your method allows me to use the CanoScan Toolbox. However, that method is less than ideal as it doesn’t allow much tweaking (descreening, etc). Thanks though — it’s a start! I just really need to be able to use the scanner in Photoshop, and so far, haven’t figured out how to. I tried changing the extension name to match all the other plug-ins, restarted, but that didn’t help either.
Lizzy, are you running Photoshop using Rosetta? You need to run PS in Rosetta for the plugin to work. I’ll update the post to reflect this… see #5 in the post.
And yes, I do scan in CS3.
I don’t think I’m running PS off Rosetta. I did a clean install of Snow Leopard onto a new 32/64-bit MBP, and was using PS well before I found Rosetta was needed for certain legacy items (e.g. installing the LiDE 80 drivers). I guess we have our answer.
Thanks again for posting this. I’ll go back to scanning off the older, 10.4 Mac. Pain in the neck, but I like the LiDE 80 too much to replace it outright.
Lizzy, I’m betting that you can use the 10.6 install disk to install just Rosetta after the fact. I haven’t tried it myself yet, but I’d be surprised if it didn’t work.
thanks, you’re an angel. works with cs3 and that canontoolbox
Thank you, thank you, thank you! What a helpful. I’m personally not concerned with Photoshop integration, but the Users/Shared fix was of course super-important to make things work with CanoScan Toolbox.
Unfortunately, Canon no longer provides the link to the driver for the LiDe 80. I just noticed that today. A few days ago it was offered and I downloaded it and had the problems discussed in applying to OS X 6.1. Since I could not get it to work I uninstalled and deleted and am left with no source for the driver download.
John, it looks like the files are still there…
http://tinyurl.com/yh56u5o
Try it again and be sure to select Mac OS X from the “Select OS” pulldown menu. Worked for me just now. Let me know if it doesn’t, as I do have the files.
To the rest of you, thanks for the nice words!
Adam
You’re right Adam, it is still there. I overlooked part of the menu. Do I have to have PhotoShop to make this work. The PhotoShop Elements 2 that came with the scanner is not compatible in OS 10.6.1. I did install that on my other machine running Tiger. I would be happy if I could get the scanner going just on my iBook G4 running Tiger. My other scanner is the HP Scanjet G4010 and it’s no match in speed and ease of operation to the Canoscan LiDE 80. Thanks for your assistance.
Yeah, I made the same mistake on their site at one point, which is the only reason I thought of it.
Nope, you don’t need photoshop… you can just use the CanoScan Toolbox application which is installed by the file titled CSTb4130MXE.dmg.gz on their site.
Good luck!
I’ve run the install but I cannot find any image labeled:
LIDE80_7275MXEN.dmg as described above.
Adam, I see it now!
You are a genius; thanks so much for your help. Wouldn’t you know, I get the system scanning and the machine develops a malfunction! Yikes! The platen tends to stall at the end of the scan and emits a buzzing sound. It does scan though thanks to you.
John
Thanks for your solution !!!
Yes, ist works perfect, but the image calls SGCS7252MXEN.dmg and not SGCS7272MXEN.dmg
Best regards from germany
Thanks for your solution!
CS3, CS4 works with LIDE80 now!
Some great ideas in this thread, but any tips for PS Elements 6? I have the latest Scangear plugin in the ‘ImportModules’ folder but it will not load at start up:
Plug-ins that failed to load:
ScanGear CS 7.2.5X NO VERSION – – from the file “/Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 6/Plug-Ins/ImportModules/ScanGear CS 7.2X.plugin”
Otherwise the Canoscan Toolbox works OK (although sometimes it can’t see the scanner, but unplugging and replugging fixes that), but the scanner is not accessible though Preview or Image Capture, not even as a Twain device. The Toolbox is such a poor app that it would be great to use a better method of capturing – any ideas?
MBP 2.5GHz, 4MB RAM, OS X 10.6.1
Hi Nigel,
Are you running Elements in Rosetta? I think I remember that PS Elements 6 was the first version they de in universal binary, in which case you’d have to open it in Rosetta to get the plugin to show up.
Hi,
Doing a Get Info on the Elements app does not give me the option to open in Rosetta, but the ‘General’ tab of Get Info shows ‘Kind: Application (Intel)’ – other 3rd party universal binary apps (e.g. Skype) show ‘Kind: Application (Universal)’ and do offer the Rosetta option. So it looks like PS Elements 6 is native Intel code and that the PPC Scangear plugin is therefore incompatible. What we need is someone to write a third-party 10.6 driver that will give Preview and Image Capture support… any volunteers?
….further research seems to suggest the Elements 6 is a Universal Binary, in which case it’s odd that the Rosetta option is not offered. However, I noticed that other Adobe apps (Acrobat, Bridge CS3) are also labelled as Kind: Application (Intel) and do not offer Rosetta either. Could this be Adobe ignoring Apple’s standards as usual so that OS X is unable to handle them correctly? The Elements 6 GUI looks more like a Windows app than anything else on my Mac!
Hmm… did you ever happen to use a program like Xslimmer, which removes the PPC code from universal binary apps? You might try reinstalling PSE regardless.
Hi,
Sorry but i am a newbie in Mac (just one week) from France. Like many others i have a problem with the Canon ToolBox which quits when i click on Scan. I understand in your instructions that i have to put the folder “Canon Lide80″ in Users/Shared. My question is where exactly because when i open the folder users/shared i have another folder which is called Drop box. Must i to put the folder in this Drop Box ? Actually in French the path is MyName/Public/Depot. Indeed, could you, please, confirm me that i am in the good path because perhaps i am not at all in the right place ! I really need my scan… Thanks in advance. For information i don’t use Photoshop.
I can only find LIDE80_7252mxen.dmg on their site. Can someone else verify this too? In the case I am right, can someone help me out with the 7275 version of the toolbox?
Zacros, the folder called CanoScanLIDE80 goes right into the Users->Shared folder. It doesn’t go in the drop box. The drop box (Depot) is there for users to leave files for each other, since you can’t access each other’s user accounts.
Bruce, be sure to follow this link…
http://tinyurl.com/yh56u5o
Choose Mac OS X from the Select OS dropdown menu. All of the files should be there.
Hope this helps!
Adam
Ok i did an error of path ! Thanks a lot, now my scan is Ok. Thank you very much for this very good tutorial.
Followed the tinyurl link and selected Mac OS X, only found the 7252 version there. No 7275. How come people can see LIDE80_7275MXEN.dmg??
Launched the 7275 version and it asks for a location to install, where shall I install it?
Thanks.
Ooops! I meant “Launched the 7252 version and it asks for a location to install, where shall I install it?”
pkkc, you’re right… “7275″ was a repeated misprint. It should read “7252″ and I’ll correct it when I get a moment. It’s just the plug-in, so install it in the photoshop plugins folder or if you don’t have photoshop, then install it in Applications->CanoScan Toolbox 4.1->Plug-Ins.
if I didn’t install rosetta in the first place: can I install it from the cd without re-installing everthing? that would get me into big trouble…
thanx!
Yep… Apple makes this easy. Just drop the 10.6 DVD into your computer. When it appears on the desktop, you’ll see a folder called Optional Installs. Run the package inside that by the same name and you should be able to add rosetta support.
Hi
I have trouble installing my Lide 80 on my Imac core I7 (switched from XP, new to Apple)
I lost the original disk but Installed the downloaded Canoscan toolbox ok (Snow leopard installed Rosetta automatically). Then I installed the driver from LiDE80_7252MXEN.dmg.
Problem is the Imac doesn’t seem to recognize the scanner at all, although it does appear in the ‘usb-device hierarchy’. The ‘scan’ box’ in the toolbox remains empty and the scanner is not listed in the finder or on the desktop. It works fine with XP. Tried re-starting, different USB ports and alternative cable but nothing seems to work…
has anyone perhaps been able to make this work for any OCR applications? I use ReadIRIS 11.6 (well at least I want to use it). I have followed the instructions as far as possible except I can’t find any plugins folder for ReadIRIS and so I can’t do that part. Any thoughts?
Wow, thanks a lot, my Lide 80 now works on CS4 rosetta mode. You saved me !
Thanks a lot for your help. I tried with Canon, but they are no help at all. It is a shame, they just want you to buy a new scanner or printer. I had a lot of help from HP for my old printers and scanners, very nice support.
But my LIDE 80 is working now thanks to your support. !!!!
Hope you can help other poor SnowLeopards to get there scanner started.
thanks and greetings
Hi Gerard,
Go here, select Mac OS from the pulldown menu, and download the installer called “CSTb4130MXE.dmg.gz”. Use this to reinstall the Scangear application and then if necessary, try doing the fix in the article again with the LiDE80_7252MXEN.dmg.
If it gives you hope, I have it working fine on my iMac core i5, although now that I think about it, there was one point where it wasn’t working for some reason but started working again after I simply unplugged the USB cable and plugged it back it.
I’ve been struggling to make my Lide 80 work with my mac. I’d still be in that state if it wasn’t for your post. Thank you!
you are a wonderful person for taking the time to post this tip and solve our problems. thank you. Boo to Canon for leaving us all in the cold, and hooray to you for saving us.
Dam it. I have tried to to this a few times. I believe that I have followed the instructions, but it does not work….. for me!!!
FYI
Rosetta is installed
running 10.6.2
have removed and installed a few times and copied file folder to proper location!!
WHAT is it?
Ps Again thx for taking the time to post
Tried to remove and reinstall and I have run into this situation ?
error code =-5000, Cannot access a filed named “ScanGear CS 7.2X
This happens when I try to load software
Thx Brian
Hi Brian,
Just to be clear… are you trying to run the plugin through Photoshop? It sounds like the plugin file itself is either corrupt or has a weird permissions issue. I’d delete it and then copy it again to Applications->Adobe Photoshop->Plug-ins->Import-export.
At what point do you get this error message? Do you get it as soon as you try to use the plugin?
Hi Adam
Im not trying to run it through a plugin as yet. Just trying to get it to work in copy ,scan mode. I do use aperture though. Have not got that far. I believe that the error came as when I found what I believed was more recent software up grade that is when the error appeared. The upgrade was to the toolbox Scan gear 7.2. I was going to put up a screen shot of the error message but could not so I type it.Any idea’s
Go to Applications->CanoScan Toolbox 4.1->Plug-Ins… is this folder empty? If so, it needs a copy of the file called “ScanGear CS 7.2X”. You can get this file in the disk image called LiDE80_7252MXEN, which you can download here…
http://tinyurl.com/yh56u5o
Even if the file is already there, I suggest you delete it and re-install the file. Maybe there was corruption in the disk image the first time you downloaded it, so you might try downloading it again to be safe. Good luck and let me know!
Your instruction worked and were easy to follow. However, now I’m having a problem where Photoshop Element 6 application closes while working in the app. Do you have any advise or fix?
Worked like a charm! Thx a lot. I was going to trash this scanner as there was no means to get it going. I use Vuescan and its working now
OS X 10.6.3, Vuescan 8.6.24
Hello all,
Belgium calling …
Have tried the proposed setup but my Lide 80 still doesn’t work. Rosetta is installed. OSX version 10.6.3. The specific folder CanonLidescan80 folder is copied into users/shared. The scan toolbox doesn’t get installed properly. It gives my the following error message :
‘Error creating file’
1008:5,-5000 Access Denied error
Any help is welcome.
Thanks in advance.
Jozef.
Second error message following the first one is that I don’t have enough priveleges to perform the installation. My account has admin priveleges.
Brilliant, thank-you SO much! I didn’t solve my problem but by setting Photoshop CS4 to open in Rosetta, I can now Scan in that instead of having to run Photoshop CS1 specially just to scan
Any idea idea how to solve the original proble, which was how to access my LiDe 20 without Photoshop but with Acorn or the Toolbox? The Toolbox says ‘failed to open a driver’, and in its ‘select other’ option, the ScanGear driver-installer shows the ToolBox as greyed out … aluminium iMac, SnowLeopard 10.6.3
yuppie
Followed instructions and driver shows up under File->Import, but then quits automatically. Helpp!
Running OS 10.6, CS3, Rosetta.
Actually, got it to run successfully but can no longer quit Photoshop. Have to force quit since quit option is unavailable under File. Anyone else have this problem?
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! THANKS
This fix worked out great for me, your blog post saved my whole afternoon. Thank you!
Hello there. I have destroyed a whole day trying to make this damn thing work on my macmini. I am running OS X 10.6.3 and I cannot do anything about it. I followed your instructions but… balls. Thoung I have installed rosetta, I have no signs that it is indeed installed.. Any ideas??
Rosetta isn’t something you ever see in action. To tell if it’s installed, simply Get Info (command-i) on any app written in universal binary. If there’s an option to Open Using Rosetta, then it’s installed.
How are you trying to access the scanner? Through Photoshop or the CanoScan Toolbox?
I access it through canoscan toolbox, and I specify photoshop as the program to link the scanned image. I tried to do that directly from photoshop, following your advice, but when I open photoshop. it delivers me the message that photoshop does not recognize this type of file..
What should I do?
I inserted the Snow leopard disc and i installed rosetta the first time. Afterwards, to verify that it was installed, I inserted the Snow leopard again and next to rosetta, it did not mention “install” but “upgrade”. However, when I open photoshop with command+i, there is not such option… What do i do wrong??
O gosh, I solved it. It took me 1,5 day to do that.
The only problem finally was the installation of rosetta. So I restored completely my Macmini and I reinstalled rosetta. Everything works fine.
Thanks a lot!
Well, I stumbled across your site via Google search. I’m running a C2D 2.33 MBP 10.6.2 with CS3 & CS4. I followed the instructions above and a bootstrap later, I’m scanning.
Good work and Thank you!
When I go to re-install the Cannon plugins (LiDE80_7252MXEN), whether I choose the Photoshop location of the ScanGear, after clicking Install I get an error message saying “Cannot access a file named “BINALIZE.DAT”. (Error Code =-5000)”. If I click OK I get another error message: “Cannot access a file named “CNQA2405_Library.shlb”. (Error Code =-5000)”. If I click OK then I get: “Cannot access a file named “CNQL2405_ButtonManager.app”. (Error Code =-5000)”. If I click OK it says install has happened and I should restart.
Anyone know what all this means?
I am running a MacBrook Pro 17″ with 10.6.4.
This works great on my imac quad running snow leopard, photoshop cs4. I did get the above BINALIZE.DAT error too, but I just restarted and accessed it fine through photoshop. Thanks so much for posting it!
it worked
[...] Quelle im Netz hab ich das Ding unter Mac OS 10.6 wieder zum Laufen (eigentlich Scannen) gebracht: How to make the Lide 80 work in 10.6 Snow Leopard. Falls der Link in Zukunft mal nicht mehr funktionieren sollte, hier der Inhalt dieser [...]
I have the latest Mac 10.6.4 and I did not need to go through the Step 5 with Photoshop. Also I could not find LIDE80 7275MXEN, only LIDE80 7252MXEN.
At the end of Step 4 my scanner started working.
For Photoshop Elements 8: In Step 5, Plug-Ins>Import/Export are two different folders. Should the “Into Plug-In” folder go into the Import Modules, or Export Modules folders (or both). Or should the “Into Plug-In” folder be in the same layer as Import Modules or Export Modules? Stated otherwise, what layer should the file ( not folder) SCANGEAR CS 7.2x end up (with the TWAIN drivers?)
I know Rosetta is on/in the computer now. Photoshop Elements 8 is made for the Intel Core processor (which I have), so don’t quite understand the need for Rosetta – nevertheless, can’t find the box to check in step 5 after pressing Command-i. Also, still unsure of where the “contents” of “Into Plug-In” go. When I start Elements, it doesn’t recognize the SCANGEAR CS 7.2x plugin.
Amazing! Took me ages, but it was very rewarding. I’m using Photoshop CS2 and I’m not even opening with Rosetta.
hey… thanks for your advice. however, it still doesn’t work for me.
i have installed rosetta, downloaded LIDE80_7252MXEN.dmg (date: 15 may 2007 – couldn’t find a more recent one!), installed it, and copied the required folder into Users->Shared.
(i don’t have photoshop)
the scanner is still not recognised.
when i try to run ScanGear CS 7.2X, i receive the following error message: “no default application specified to open the document ScanGear CS 7.2X.”
where is the problem?
cheers, gina
Hi Gina,
Try downloading the LIDE80_7252MXEN.dmg again from this link…
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/scanners/canoscan_series/canoscan_lide_80#DriversAndSoftware
The date on this file is 7/29/2009 – maybe that will help. Good luck!
Adam
thanks. i have downloaded the driver and the canoscan toolbox 4.1, which they recommend together with it. (previously, i tried with toolbox 5.014, same result.)
…interestingly, the website claims that the file is from 7/29/2009, but when i download it, it’s still the 2007 version…
anyway, i installed the driver directly into the applications folder as well as inside the toolbox. it still tells me that there is no default application specified… grrrr
ah no, it’s actually even worse. the claimed 2009 version is from 2005!
me again, sorry. i missed the indication that the scangear must be installed into the plug-in folder… i did that now, and still get the same error message when i launch it – however, using the toolbox, i can now use the scanner!!! yeah!!!
thanks for your help, and sorry for my stupidity
oh dear, oh dear,
it works fine on my mac now, but i have tried to do the same on my brother’s mac (exactly the same as i have! and he is the main scanner user) – but the canoscan toolbox always “unexpectedly terminates” whenever i ask it to scan something…
i have removed it and re-installed, also downloaded the programme from another country’s website… still the same result.
help!!!
i wonder if the problem could be caused by my brother’s operating system being in german…? the driver and toolbox SW are in english. i tried to download the german versions, but the files are strange and don’t work.
the file is called “s4103dex.bin” and when downloaded appears as “CanoScan Toolbox Inst Carb….sit”
when opened, it’s a textfile full of letter salad… it doesn’t do anything!
I contacted canon by email about my issue trying to run lide80 in Photoshop cs5, 30 mins later i got this response:
about to try it…
The information provide to us from Adobe only show at this moment for
CS4 & CS5 version where you would have to download the twain plug in
from their website. I will provide you with that information below.
Install the Adobe TWAIN plug-in
The TWAIN plug-in is considered to be an optional plug-in and therefore
is not installed by default when you install Adobe Photoshop CS4 (Mac)
or CS5 (Mac/Win). You will need to add this manually. Detailed
instructions can be found on Adobe’s website. Click here to access.
Follow the instructions given to install the CS5 plugin
CS4 users can also install the plugin by using one of the methods listed
below:
Method 1 – Install from the Adobe Photoshop CS4 original installation
disk)
Quit Photoshop CS4
Copy the TWAIN plug-in from the //Goodies/Optional
plug-ins/Import-Export folder on your installation media into the /Adobe
Photoshop CS4/Plug-ins/Import-Export folder on your hard disk.
Restart Photoshop to enable the plug-in.
This information is further explained on Adobe’s website.
Method 2 – Download the optional plug-ins from Adobe’s website and
install the TWAIN plug-in.
You can download the optional plug-ins at: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=39&platform=Macintosh
Once downloaded and extracted, to install the legacy TWAIN plug-in for
Macintosh,
copy the ///Goodies/Optional plug-Ins/Import-Export/TWAIN
plug-in
into the //Adobe Photoshop CS4/Plug-ins/Import-Export folder.
Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance with your
CanoScan LiDE 80.
Thank you for choosing Canon.
Well it was prompt information from canon, but didn’t work…
running 10.6.5 and trying to get my LIDE 80 running in CS5.
I’ve put my Os install disc in twice trying to get the rosetta, and seems all good, but when i get info on the photoshop icon, I can’t locate an area to check rosetta. hmm.
and then when trying the toolbox approached, i have the canoscan plug in in the right spot. and correct one downloaded, but in the scan menu when it asks you up top to choose a program to open your pics after scanning… i browse and cannot get the photoshop icon or any other possible icon in applications to make the word OPEN clickable. therefore i never am able to click the word SCAN.
I”m still hopeful to get it working, and your thread is the closest i feel i’ve gotten, so thanks for all your time.
Hi Kel,
I don’t think you’re going to get this to work with CS5, the reason being that CS5 dropped support for Universal Binary code, which this plug-in was written in. It’s a good move for the Creative Suite, but a tough move for LIDE 80 users and people on pre-Intel Macs. Without Universal Binary, you can’t open an app in Rosetta, which is a crucial part of my workaround.
For this reason, I kept Photoshop CS4 when I installed CS5. I use CS4 or the CanoScan Toolbox when I want to scan.
I hadn’t thought to update the article with this info, so thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Cheers!
Adam
Oh, as for scanning to CS5 from Toolbox, I think I see your problem, again due to the old code in Toolbox…
Toolbox sees Photoshop CS5 as a folder, but you can work around this. Instead of directing Toolbox to scan to:
Applications->Adobe Photoshop CS5->Adobe Photoshop CS5
Direct it to:
Applications->Adobe Photoshop CS5->Adobe Photoshop CS5->Contents->MacOS->Adobe Photoshop CS5
Thanks, i did try that ironically, and just tried it again, it crashes toolbox “toolbox unexpectedly quit”. urgh.
oh well, i gave it a good shot, but i am picking up a new epson all in one printer/scanner off craigslist today.
goodbye lide80, hello new technology.
Thanks for your work arounds alot of lide80′s were salvaged!
I’m not sure how long this party will last for the rest of us LIDE 80 hold outs – we’ll see if Apple includes Rosetta support in 10.7…
Enjoy your new tech!
Thanks for this very useful tip.
I had one more issue: as I migrated my files from my previous Mac I had an EMPTY Pref file in the preference folder. For some reason, the installer could not write the required files into it so the installation wasn’t complete even though the installer said it was successful. I manually removed the empty pref folder and rerun the instal for a finally really successful installation.
Good luck to all.
The LIDE80_7252MXEN.dmg link no longer appears to exist on the canon site
Thanks for the heads-up. I posted a link to the file on the article.
Thank you for this clearly written and precise fix. I’d never heard of Rosetta but then a novice like me hasn’t heard of lots of stuff like this
Fortunately there are people like you out there helping people like us.
Thanks for the kind words, Derek!
I have the same problem Derek posted back on Sept.11…running Photoshop Elements 8 which doesn’t give you the option to ‘open with Rosetta’ (although I know I do have Rosetta installed).
Also, as he asked,>> For Photoshop Elements 8: In Step 5, Plug-Ins>Import/Export are two different folders. Should the “Into Plug-In” folder go into the Import Modules, or Export Modules folders (or both).<<
I did not see an answer to this question, but I do see a 'thank you' from him. What am I missing??
Hi Ray,
I believe that PS Elements 8, like CS5, was not written in Universal Binary and therefore won’t work with Rosetta. This is why even though I use CS5 myself, I kept a copy of PS CS4 for scanning since it was the last version written in Universal Binary. Do you have an older version of Elements you could try the plugin with?
Best,
Adam
Hi Adam,
Unfortunately I do not have an older version of PS Elements to work with. The frustrating thing for me is that I have a CanoScan LiDe 60 and a CanoScan LiDe 200 and they both work fine with Snow Leopard. But I want my LiDe 80 to work because that’s the only model that has an attachment for slides and negatives!
After a frustrating evening with Mac OS 10.6 and Photoshop CS 5, I finally got the whole thing working. I followed your instructions for installing the Canon drivers, which got CanoScan Toolbox working, and then I used the “Link Scanned Image to” setting so that Photoshop opens after Toolbox saves the scan. The trick is to go into the Photoshop CS 5 “package” and link to the Adobe Photoshop CS5 Unix executable in the MacOS folder. Toolbox makes this easy to do since it doesn’t recognize the “package” as an application. Simply click on Photoshop and keep going! If you check the “Use scanner driver to make advanced settings” box in Toolbox, it’s almost as good as scanning from within Photoshop.
Robert or other expert:
I went all the way till the comment made on March 1, 2011.
However, I have a problem with the “Link scanned image to” Following the advice of Robert went to app–Photoshop– and… could someone let me know the precise path, right after?
Hi there,
I cannot find the file “Into Plug-In”. Where should I be looking for this? I’m not sure where to find the disk image.
Thanks for your help.
OK I found it, sorry!
I followed your instructions and it all worked perfectly. Scanner works in CS4 now.
I would’ve been lost without your help.
Many thanks.
FYI: In answer to Joel’s question above (January 2010) regarding scanning for OCR, I have found Acrobat Pro to be useful for this (if he has Creative Suite that is). After scanning a page of text and saving as .jpg, then go to: Acrobat Pro>Document>OCR Text Recognition> to convert to text.
Text can be saved in a variety of formats from PDF to rich text RTF. Very useful.
Disk Mounting failed.

So any ideas now that OSX Lion is eliminating Rosetta support? I’m going to upgrade but don’t want to have to trash my scanner.
Yes, Rosetta is officially out of Lion. Sadly.
The solution is to download the latest TWAIN plug in for photoshop CS5.
Go here:

Fixed mine in an instant.
It worked perfectly for me using Leopard Mac OS X 10.5.8 and Photoshop CS4. Thanks a lot!
