How to make the Lide 80 work in 10.6 Snow Leopard

Lots of people are having trouble getting the Lide 80 to work in 10.6 “Snow Leopard”. Well I was able to recreate the issue (application runs, but unexpectedly quits the second you try to perform a scan) and come up with a fix. Instructions:
- Be sure you have installed Rosetta. It is an option when installing 10.6 Snow Leopard. It is not installed by default, so you will need to customize your install.
- Be sure you have the latest version of the LIDE80_7275MXEN.dmg file. Even though it is the same old version number, Canon seems to have updated the installed to make it work in 10.5 and up.
- Run the installer.
- The problem is that the installer misses one item during the installation. Re-open the LIDE80_7275MXEN.dmg image. Inside you will see a folder titled “Into Users_Shared”. Inside that you will find a folder called CanoScanLIDE80. Copy this folder into Users->Shared on your hard drive.
- If you’re using Photoshop, look in the disk image for a folder called “Into Plug-In” and copy its contents to Applications->Adobe Photoshop->Plug-Ins->Import/Export. You must run Photoshop in Rosetta in order for the plugin to work. To do so, go to the Photoshop app and click once on it to select it. Then press Command-i to bring up the Get Info window. Click the box which says Open Using Rosetta.
- Restart your computer.
- You’re done. Hope this works for you… please let me know!

it works!!!
thank you thank you!
really appreciate you taking the time to fix this problem!
I just don’t know what to say..I’m giggling like a schoolgirl in seeing my Lide80 working under 10.6.1.
I use Hamrick’s excellent Vuescan but, even with Use Rosetta toggled it was crashing.
The trick was adding the missing folder into Shared.
Thank you soooooooo very much…this needs to be shared to prevent fellow L80 users from dumping this otherwise great scanner.
I must be doing something wrong, but I can’t figure out what! Gah. Are you using Photoshop CS3 or another version?
I should add that your method allows me to use the CanoScan Toolbox. However, that method is less than ideal as it doesn’t allow much tweaking (descreening, etc). Thanks though — it’s a start! I just really need to be able to use the scanner in Photoshop, and so far, haven’t figured out how to. I tried changing the extension name to match all the other plug-ins, restarted, but that didn’t help either.
Lizzy, are you running Photoshop using Rosetta? You need to run PS in Rosetta for the plugin to work. I’ll update the post to reflect this… see #5 in the post.
And yes, I do scan in CS3.
I don’t think I’m running PS off Rosetta. I did a clean install of Snow Leopard onto a new 32/64-bit MBP, and was using PS well before I found Rosetta was needed for certain legacy items (e.g. installing the LiDE 80 drivers). I guess we have our answer.
Thanks again for posting this. I’ll go back to scanning off the older, 10.4 Mac. Pain in the neck, but I like the LiDE 80 too much to replace it outright.
Lizzy, I’m betting that you can use the 10.6 install disk to install just Rosetta after the fact. I haven’t tried it myself yet, but I’d be surprised if it didn’t work.
thanks, you’re an angel. works with cs3 and that canontoolbox
Thank you, thank you, thank you! What a helpful. I’m personally not concerned with Photoshop integration, but the Users/Shared fix was of course super-important to make things work with CanoScan Toolbox.
Unfortunately, Canon no longer provides the link to the driver for the LiDe 80. I just noticed that today. A few days ago it was offered and I downloaded it and had the problems discussed in applying to OS X 6.1. Since I could not get it to work I uninstalled and deleted and am left with no source for the driver download.
John, it looks like the files are still there…

Try it again and be sure to select Mac OS X from the “Select OS” pulldown menu. Worked for me just now. Let me know if it doesn’t, as I do have the files.
To the rest of you, thanks for the nice words!
Adam
You’re right Adam, it is still there. I overlooked part of the menu. Do I have to have PhotoShop to make this work. The PhotoShop Elements 2 that came with the scanner is not compatible in OS 10.6.1. I did install that on my other machine running Tiger. I would be happy if I could get the scanner going just on my iBook G4 running Tiger. My other scanner is the HP Scanjet G4010 and it’s no match in speed and ease of operation to the Canoscan LiDE 80. Thanks for your assistance.
Yeah, I made the same mistake on their site at one point, which is the only reason I thought of it.
Nope, you don’t need photoshop… you can just use the CanoScan Toolbox application which is installed by the file titled CSTb4130MXE.dmg.gz on their site.
Good luck!
I’ve run the install but I cannot find any image labeled:
LIDE80_7275MXEN.dmg as described above.
Adam, I see it now!
You are a genius; thanks so much for your help. Wouldn’t you know, I get the system scanning and the machine develops a malfunction! Yikes! The platen tends to stall at the end of the scan and emits a buzzing sound. It does scan though thanks to you.
John
Thanks for your solution !!!
Yes, ist works perfect, but the image calls SGCS7252MXEN.dmg and not SGCS7272MXEN.dmg
Best regards from germany
Thanks for your solution!
CS3, CS4 works with LIDE80 now!
Some great ideas in this thread, but any tips for PS Elements 6? I have the latest Scangear plugin in the ‘ImportModules’ folder but it will not load at start up:
Plug-ins that failed to load:
ScanGear CS 7.2.5X NO VERSION – – from the file “/Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 6/Plug-Ins/ImportModules/ScanGear CS 7.2X.plugin”
Otherwise the Canoscan Toolbox works OK (although sometimes it can’t see the scanner, but unplugging and replugging fixes that), but the scanner is not accessible though Preview or Image Capture, not even as a Twain device. The Toolbox is such a poor app that it would be great to use a better method of capturing – any ideas?
MBP 2.5GHz, 4MB RAM, OS X 10.6.1
Hi Nigel,
Are you running Elements in Rosetta? I think I remember that PS Elements 6 was the first version they de in universal binary, in which case you’d have to open it in Rosetta to get the plugin to show up.
Hi,
Doing a Get Info on the Elements app does not give me the option to open in Rosetta, but the ‘General’ tab of Get Info shows ‘Kind: Application (Intel)’ – other 3rd party universal binary apps (e.g. Skype) show ‘Kind: Application (Universal)’ and do offer the Rosetta option. So it looks like PS Elements 6 is native Intel code and that the PPC Scangear plugin is therefore incompatible. What we need is someone to write a third-party 10.6 driver that will give Preview and Image Capture support… any volunteers?
….further research seems to suggest the Elements 6 is a Universal Binary, in which case it’s odd that the Rosetta option is not offered. However, I noticed that other Adobe apps (Acrobat, Bridge CS3) are also labelled as Kind: Application (Intel) and do not offer Rosetta either. Could this be Adobe ignoring Apple’s standards as usual so that OS X is unable to handle them correctly? The Elements 6 GUI looks more like a Windows app than anything else on my Mac!
Hmm… did you ever happen to use a program like Xslimmer, which removes the PPC code from universal binary apps? You might try reinstalling PSE regardless.
Hi,
Sorry but i am a newbie in Mac (just one week) from France. Like many others i have a problem with the Canon ToolBox which quits when i click on Scan. I understand in your instructions that i have to put the folder “Canon Lide80″ in Users/Shared. My question is where exactly because when i open the folder users/shared i have another folder which is called Drop box. Must i to put the folder in this Drop Box ? Actually in French the path is MyName/Public/Depot. Indeed, could you, please, confirm me that i am in the good path because perhaps i am not at all in the right place ! I really need my scan… Thanks in advance. For information i don’t use Photoshop.
I can only find LIDE80_7252mxen.dmg on their site. Can someone else verify this too? In the case I am right, can someone help me out with the 7275 version of the toolbox?
Zacros, the folder called CanoScanLIDE80 goes right into the Users->Shared folder. It doesn’t go in the drop box. The drop box (Depot) is there for users to leave files for each other, since you can’t access each other’s user accounts.
Bruce, be sure to follow this link…

Choose Mac OS X from the Select OS dropdown menu. All of the files should be there.
Hope this helps!
Adam
Ok i did an error of path ! Thanks a lot, now my scan is Ok. Thank you very much for this very good tutorial.
Followed the tinyurl link and selected Mac OS X, only found the 7252 version there. No 7275. How come people can see LIDE80_7275MXEN.dmg??
Launched the 7275 version and it asks for a location to install, where shall I install it?
Thanks.
Ooops! I meant “Launched the 7252 version and it asks for a location to install, where shall I install it?”
pkkc, you’re right… “7275″ was a repeated misprint. It should read “7252″ and I’ll correct it when I get a moment. It’s just the plug-in, so install it in the photoshop plugins folder or if you don’t have photoshop, then install it in Applications->CanoScan Toolbox 4.1->Plug-Ins.
if I didn’t install rosetta in the first place: can I install it from the cd without re-installing everthing? that would get me into big trouble…
thanx!
Yep… Apple makes this easy. Just drop the 10.6 DVD into your computer. When it appears on the desktop, you’ll see a folder called Optional Installs. Run the package inside that by the same name and you should be able to add rosetta support.
Hi
I have trouble installing my Lide 80 on my Imac core I7 (switched from XP, new to Apple)
I lost the original disk but Installed the downloaded Canoscan toolbox ok (Snow leopard installed Rosetta automatically). Then I installed the driver from LiDE80_7252MXEN.dmg.
Problem is the Imac doesn’t seem to recognize the scanner at all, although it does appear in the ‘usb-device hierarchy’. The ’scan’ box’ in the toolbox remains empty and the scanner is not listed in the finder or on the desktop. It works fine with XP. Tried re-starting, different USB ports and alternative cable but nothing seems to work…
has anyone perhaps been able to make this work for any OCR applications? I use ReadIRIS 11.6 (well at least I want to use it). I have followed the instructions as far as possible except I can’t find any plugins folder for ReadIRIS and so I can’t do that part. Any thoughts?
Wow, thanks a lot, my Lide 80 now works on CS4 rosetta mode. You saved me !
Thanks a lot for your help. I tried with Canon, but they are no help at all. It is a shame, they just want you to buy a new scanner or printer. I had a lot of help from HP for my old printers and scanners, very nice support.
But my LIDE 80 is working now thanks to your support. !!!!
Hope you can help other poor SnowLeopards to get there scanner started.
thanks and greetings
Hi Gerard,
Go here, select Mac OS from the pulldown menu, and download the installer called “CSTb4130MXE.dmg.gz”. Use this to reinstall the Scangear application and then if necessary, try doing the fix in the article again with the LiDE80_7252MXEN.dmg.
If it gives you hope, I have it working fine on my iMac core i5, although now that I think about it, there was one point where it wasn’t working for some reason but started working again after I simply unplugged the USB cable and plugged it back it.
