The CanoScan Lide 80 and Snow Leopard (Mac OS 10.6)
Edit: I’ve figured out the issue and rather than edit the heck out of this post, I’ve created a new post with instructions.
As I mentioned in a previous post, my Lide 80 scanner has been working fine in Snow Leopard, despite the fact that it hasn’t been officially support since 10.4. Well this seems to have generated some interest from frustrated Lide 80 users, so I thought I’d give a few tips:
- Be certain to download the most recent versions of the drivers/software from Canon’s site. Despite the fact that version numbers haven’t changed in years, it does appear that Canon has updated the files themselves.
- If the software installer is problematic, you might try logging in as the root user in order to install the software.
- You’re going to need Rosetta installed. The 10.6 installer doesn’t install this by default, but you can install it after-the-fact from the installer disk. This will allow the older CanoScan software and drivers to function in 10.6.
I am able to scan both through the Photoshop plug-in and with the CanoScan software. To scan through Photoshop, you must open the application with Rosetta. To do this, find the application and select it, click command-i for Get Info, and check the box to open it in Rosetta.
Hopefully this will help you get some more life out of your Lide 80. If you found this helpful or have any questions, please feel free to use the comments section by clicking the number to the left of this post.

I’m making some progress on emulating your success. I’m not there yet, but I was quite happy to see that the driver – was updated in July of 2009. I don’t know if CanoScan LiDE80 Scanner Driver ScanGear CS Ver. 7.2.5.2X (Mac OS X 10.1/10.2/10.3/10.4) will allow me to use my scanner again by running this LiDE80_7252MXEN.dmg as root, but it’s interesting.

Wanted to put in a link to setting up root for a Snow Leopard – http://snowleopardtips.net/tips/enable-root-account-in-snow-leopard.html
And also to say that you have to install Rosetta from the Snow Leopard install DVD.
I tried this with the CanoScan Toolbox X that came with the scanner. Totally wasn’t able to use Rosetta. Took me a while to find out how to get Rosetta working particularly since I couldn’t see the “Open with Rosetta” link.
I might need to find an alternate MacOSX package that can work with the scanner. I use GIMP and not Photoshop so don’t think this solution will work.
It doesn’t show you the “open in Rosetta” option for programs which aren’t universal binary. Since the Canoscan Toolbox is written for PPC, it just opens in Rosetta by default. Photoshop CS3 is written in universal binary, so by default it opens without Rosetta on Intel Macs, but the option is there to choose to open it in Rosetta to use older plug-ins.
Strangely enough, at one point it wasn’t working for me, but just disconnecting and reconnecting the scanner for some reason fixed the issue… something to consider as you troubleshoot this. Canoscan Toolbox works for me too.
Let us know how it goes, Mike.
I tried as you suggested. Installing worked fine, but when trying to access the plugin in Photoshop CS4 (launched under Rosetta) Photoshop immediately crashes (same with CanoScan Toolbox). Which version of Photoshop do you use?
I use CS3… I recently upgraded to CS4, but kept Photoshop CS3 just for scanning, figuring that way I won’t have to remember to check and uncheck the Rosetta option. So CS4 opens normally and CS3 in Rosetta.
I haven’t tried it in CS4, but the CanoScan Toolbox has been fine. Makes me think your problem isn’t with those apps, but elsewhere. If you create a new user and try to scan, does the same thing happen?
This has been really helpful, but I’m still not there yet. Feel like i’m getting close though…
I have photoshop cs3 running in rosetta and the latest plugin installed but as soon as i try to import the image from the scanner photoshop immediately crashes, any ideas??? it’s driving me crazy!
Hi Robbie. I’d be interested to know what happens if you make a new user and try doing the scan. It might give us a hint as to whether the problem is within your user folder or in the installation itself.
The success of my scanner setup is difficult to replicate because it was a 10.5 install which I upgraded to 10.6 and the scanner just kept working. Since there seems to be enough interest, I’ll do a clean install of 10.6 on my laptop and see if I can get the scanner working with that.

ok, i created a new user but photoshop is still crashing when i try tio inport from the scangear…
good luck with your laptop! i’ll keep my fingers crossed!
Hi, I’ve been trying to get my scanner to work too. I don’t have Photoshop so i’ve been trying to get it to work with the Canon Toolbox. I got the Toolbox and the driver to install but whenever I click the scan button the app crashes.
Also I forgot to mention. I just did a clean install of OS X 10.6. I haven’t updated to 10.6.1 yet.
Good people, I believe I’ve found the fix. See my new post for instructions.

[...] Canon site), it seems to run fine. From the sounds of it though, you can install it fine. As noted here, you're going to need Rosetta installed. Have you got Rosetta installed? __________________ [...]
So that got me thinking — “I should check my directories and see if those folders even exist on my system.” Lo and behold, they didn’t. And at long last, I was sure I had found the solution to this convoluted problem. I quickly created the following two directories on my file system, under my main user account:
/Library/Application Support/Canon/ScanGear/Plugins
/Library/Application Support/Canon/ScanGear/Plug-ins
works!!!
